Production in the UK is largely untested and may be limited to Kent, Sussex, Beds and other parts of the UK with chalky, alkaline, stoney, non compacted, not water logged soil as it is not a native variety, but has excellent production rates all over Europe where soil conditions are as broadly described above. It also has a high price on the market and is a highly prized variety. Harvest can take upto 8 years (usually less) and the grass will 'burn' all around the base of the tree where the fruits are going to appear - a characteristic of all black truffles. Prefers a soil which is ph 7-8, free draining, not compacted, containing chalky/calcium stones, even if quite poor soil. Plant about 4-5m apart. |
